Starter??

The starter is going out on my car and m
question is while i was trying to start it up
yesterday and it would not turn all the way
over just made a winding sound i coukd
smell somethig similar to a really hot
battery or possibly a burnt wire, so if the
starter is going out will it smell that way or
is it something completely different what i
do know is now my car wont start at all
through the ignition i have to pop the
clutch to start it up
