Dash temperature guage reads 250 but engine is 195 - 200

Asked by Aug 11, 2014 at 06:20 PM about the 1993 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne Stepside RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1993 Chevy k1500 truck 5.7 engine. New water pump, engine thermostat, and radiator flushed. I checked the top of the engine and it runs at 195 - 200 degrees. I also put on a new engine temperature sender unit which is two wire replacing a one wire unit. I suspect it may be that but I don't know what the ohms should be hot or cold.

With the gauge pinned on the hot side, the wire coming from the sending unit to the dash gauge is shorted to ground. In other words the wire has a bare spot and is touching something metal. Or, unplug the sending unit and start the truck. The gauge should be on cold. If not that confirms the shorted wire. HTH. -Jim

the 2 wire units will do that, they will peg out a gauge at only 210 becasue of different ohm readings. You need to go back to a 1 wire.

I changed it to a one pin and now it is perfect! Thank you...
