how can I tell if my 1996 chevy 1/2 ton 1500 5.7L V8 is a vortec engine?

It is a Vortec engine. That year is when they started with the 5.7L engine. So If it were not a Vortec, It would have a TBI on the intake manifold that has only 2 fuel injectors in the throttle body. Also there is a plastic cover over the top of the intake that should say Vortec on top.
