Fuel pump relay

Why would fuel pump relay get
hot and go bad after 15 to 20
miles of driving

Relay was already bad possible that it may have been used was it new?

If the fuel pump has to work extra hard it can cause strain on the whole circut. Restricted fuel filter, fuel pump sock, kinked/ pinched line or fuel pressure regulator are places to check for that. Other than that the pump itself might be giving up the ghost
