car sputters to start, runs, then simply dies while driving short distance

May not have adequate fuel pressure, along with about a thousand other things that can cause such symptoms. You'll have to check for vacuum leaks, PCV, EGR, throttle body, coil(s), plugs/wires, fuel delivery, and so on.
