What would cause my car to trie to overheat but doesn't get to redline heat smelled coming out vents shut motor off popped the hood an there was oil all over front of motor above center spark plug

Most likely the intake manifold gaskets have failed. These engines are notorious for that. Pull the oil dipstick. If it has white milky "goop" on it then that's what has happened. You'll want to have both the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets replaced. Also, since the upper intake manifold is plastic it tends to crack. Replace it when you do the gaskets. It comes in a kit. HTH. -Jim

You're welcome, glad to help. It's pretty involved. Basically the whole top of the engine has to come off. It's about a 6 hour job at a shop. HTH. -Jim
Oh and after the repair be sure to change the oil and filter twice. The first time drain and add fresh oil before the car is started after the repair. Let it idle for about 30 minutes. Then change the oil and filter again. This will remove any antifreeze contamination from the oil and pevent a spun camshaft bearing. HTH. -Jim
