If transmission has an issue would check engine light appear?

White smoke sometimes comes from tail
pipe. Speed isn't consistent. Sometimes I
hear roughness when trying to accelerate
speed.

Not really sure but sometimes white smoke indicates water damage or fuel not burning the right way.
