If transmission has an issue would check engine light appear?

Asked by Aug 14, 2015 at 11:30 PM about the 1994 Buick Park Avenue 4 Dr STD Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

White smoke sometimes comes from tail
pipe. Speed isn't consistent. Sometimes I
hear roughness when trying to accelerate
speed.

Not really sure but sometimes white smoke indicates water damage or fuel not burning the right way.

Yes, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) controls and monitors both the engine and transmission. A transmission problem can very well trigger the check engine light. Have the computer (PCM) scanned at your local auto parts store. Most will do it for free. Post the trouble codes here and we can help further. HTH. - Jim
