If the car just sits there with the engine revving then your transmission is probably shot but check the fluid level before getting a new trans. If it is just running really rich then check your air cleaner to see if it is dirty but you may have a leaking fuel injector. Does your motor oil smell like gasoline? Are your spark plugs black and sooty?

Something similar happened with me. I have an 04 LeSabre. Step on the gas and it crawls up to speed after barely moving. It was also having a severe misfire problem with a strong smell of raw gas. All of this happened suddenly one day when I started it. Found a corroded connector on one of the three ignition coils. Replaced the wire and the coil pack but nothing changed. Replaced the ignition control module (ICM) and it worked! The ignition control module is the piece that the distributor pack sits on. It was a bit expensive to replace but Rock Auto and Amazon have some good prices.
