Column shift linkage gone?!?!
My 99 buick century sat for 2wks because it
wouldn't start...crack...click...long story short it
wasn't in park. The shift linkage in the steering
wheel housing is broken. I have searched for
videos or pictures to help me replace whats wrong
but no luck. Anyone had this issue or know of a
step byb step that can help me. I currently have to
reach into my dash an push/pull the gear selection
rod an its not the most fun when in a rush.
The easiest and probably cheapest way to fix it is to get a steering column from the junkyard. If you decide to do that, transfer the complete ignition switch assembly and ignition lock cylinder to the replacement steering column so you won't have any security system issues. Also, be careful working with the airbag module. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and wait 5 minutes for the airbag system reserve power to discharge before beginning disassembly of the steering column. The system has a power reserve in case the battery is disabled in a collision the airbags will still deploy. HTH. -Jim
