Auto shop says they need $800  to replace catalytic converter.  How can I clean the
converter instead of replacing it.  Car has 149000 miles

Usually when a shop says it needs replaced, it needs replaced due to the output of the catalyst is too high to pass emission standards. I would try an exhaust shop for a replacement price, the one they gave you is too high.

Try rockauto.com or the muffler shop for a universal converter. It'll be much cheaper. Also, be sure that the correct replacement converter is installed. If your Pacifica has California emissions you must put a C.A.R.B. (California Air Resource Board) compliant converter back on or the check engine light and converter trouble code will return right away. HTH. -Jim

Thanks guys, found a guy locally who when to the local technical college and has a garage. Cost $700, but the price included the shop getting the inspection sticker and fixing a fluid leak.
