doors open warning light always on

Asked by May 11, 2013 at 11:11 AM about the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought X3 yesterday, door open light always on and cargo area side interior lights stay on constantly when headlights are on. Dealer said it came in this way, the lights shut off about 15 minutes after shutting car off but on while driving at night.
Any help would be appreciated.

I assume it wasn't a BMW dealer. Does the car come with a warranty from the dealer? If so have them fix it on their dime. If not, you'll have to fix it yourself. The switch that controls this light is part of the complete lock assembly inside the door. It might be broken or a wiring issue. Since the wiring is connected to the airbag in the door, I would only have a professional look at it. I assume the cargo lights are related to the problem. I'd have a good independent BMW repair shop look at it or your closest BMW dealer.

Thanks, no warranty and not a BMW dealer. I'm hoping to get in to a BMW shop today. Since I have the 3 day lemon law. If this is an expensive fix, I need to know asap so I can take it back. Also concerned it could be a sign of future electrical issues.

It's an 07 with 75k on it, got it for 15. Carfax is clean but it's for my wife and she travels for her work so I need to feel good about reliability but dont want a new car due to the miles she puts on annually. So the switch that controls the cargo lights is in the tailgate right? I understand it would be best to have a professional check it out and I will but as long as there is no airbag in the tail gate do you think it would be ok for me to look at the wiring? The light in the tailgate itself goes off so I figure the switch is working?? Thanks again for your time and advice.

I'm sure you can check out the wiring in the trunk. Not sure where to look for the issue. As far as a "Lemon Law", it only applies to new cars.

Don't know about other states, but there sure IS a Used Car Lemon Law. fact-sheet
