Car won't start

Asked by GuruWNXQ8 May 11, 2018 at 03:48 PM about the 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier RS Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After changing the fuel pump, car started and ran
well, was about to take it for a ride after lowering
the Jack's and it won't start and was not cranking,
so i jumped the starter solenoid and it started.
Drove it a few days that way by always poping the
hood and jumping the starter. Then yesterday I
decided to see if it would start with a key and it did.
What do u think could be the issue, could it be the
starter relay, cus am about to order a new starter.

Sounds like a bad battery connection or cable issue.check all connections for tightness and corrosion.

I looked at info for 4 cylinder. Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good. At the starter motor motor, two voltage circuits. One comes from the battery hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position and is wired through the neutral or clutch switch, depending on your tranny. The starter motor usually grounds through the engine block. If you suspect the starter motor, sometimes, I remove the starter, lay it on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from charged battery to starter motor, at the least, it should kick out the drive gear and spin.

All lights are on and connections are fine, I even took the battery to AutoZone for recharge and was told that the battery was %100 ok and would require no charge.
