Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 2006 Subaru Impreza 2.5I its been giving the P0457 code for quite some time now, every time I check things and they seem to be fine I will drive it and have to stop at a light or a sign and it stalls out or nearly stalls out.

EVAP System leak, if it’s trying to stall then something is messed up with it, it could be full of fuel and dumping it into the engine at idle. Best to have a shop dig into it. Most use smoke machines to find problems with EVAP systems.

This is a leak in the EVAP system. The EVAP system pulls gasoline fumes into the engine to be burned instead of being released in the atmosphere. To find the leak you're going to have to get a smoke test. The smoke test involves forcing harmless smoke into the EVAP system through the gas tank. Anywhere smoke comes out, you have a leak. A bad gas cap, if equipped, can cause this trouble code as well. But don't just replace the gas cap and hope it goes away like 95% of people and are disappointed when it does not! Hope that helps! Jim
