radio sound

2007 HHR when I turn the radio on you can't hardley hear it.  if i turnthe volume up and then down real fast the sound comes on louder.  not like it used to be but you can hear.  any ideas on this

the speaker wires short out. Mine would work on certain speakers certain days. I replaced them all.
