Throttle Body Assembly

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light is on and the code it's throwing is
P0121 - Throttle Position (TP) Sensor 1 Performance. I
took the car to a mechanic and was told that I needed a
new throttle body, pedal, and some gasket that goes with
the TB. He started the repairs and has replaced the pedal
already, however, he received a defective TB so I'm
suppose to take it back to him today, now that he has the
new TB. I'm now wondering if I even needed to replace
the pedal. Do you have to replace the pedal when you
replace a throttle body?  Also, do you think that my check
engine light will go off by simply cleaning the TB?  I'm
worried that this guy is taking advantage of me because
I've checked prices on a new TB and they seem to be
significantly cheaper. He is charging me $262 (for the part
only - and said that's HIS cost) but AutoZone has the
same part for $189. That wasn't even the cheapest price
that I found.  They appear to range in price from $108 -
160 online. He also said that it would take an hour to
replace the part. However, yesterday, when he had to
remove the defective TB and put my old TB back in, it
only took him maybe 10 mins. I've already paid for 2.5
hours of labor for the work he did yesterday. Am I getting
ripped off?

This is hard to say, my guess is maybe being a little ripped off. Looking at the code I see no mention of a pedal, so what is it anyway? Just mechanical or trying to tell you it is electric? I am not totally sure on that one. Ask him. Another problem with some garages is they may lot for an 1hrs. time an only take 15 min. to do the job but still charge you the 1hr. And it is not your fault the TB was defective, that time has ben paid for. The throttle body itself yes, needs to be replaced as you can't take out the TPS and replace it.

All shops mark up parts. Why? Because they warrenty defective parts such as your case. It's not your fault the part was bad. It's not the shops fault either but that's how they cover themselves. Otherwise get your own parts and get no warrenty. The book time may call for an hour. If you mechanic gets good at a repair don't punish him for knowing what he is doing. Also cheap parts are everywhere, if this shop was like most they wouldn't want to get the cheapo throttle body. Most likely they got an ac delco tb, those are usually not barging bin prices.
