i spilled soda on the gears of a saturn sl1 .2002

can I assume you meant the shifter area? Remove the plastic panels around the shifter and clean up what you can.

clean it as best as you can, do not pour water on the area !

Try to get as much of it as you can, a wet or dry vacuum works really good in cases like this. The next thing was it regular soda or diet, if it was regular soda then eventually your going to have a sticky residue that will have to be with a good non-conductive cleaner such as Electromotive spray but be careful around plastics and paint with this stuff, if it is diet soda then just a good wipe down with vacuuming should work.
