2001 SL need a Smog Pump now discontinued. Can I use a 2001 SC1 Model Smog Pump ?

2001 Saturn SL 5 Speed now has 274,000. I have replaced the Water Pump,
Tensioner Pulley, Belt, Water Hoses, Thermostat last yr. One week ago
replaced both Oxygen Sensors, Spark Plugs and Wires and it has a new
battery. Runs like a kitten but the Check Engine Light is still on.  Put a
positive and Negative battery test and found Smog Pump not working.
Discontinued now. But the SC1 model is not. Can I switch OEM part
21015184 with 2105056 ?  Seems to be similar or almost identical. This is
the 4th Saturn I have owned and the best for gas mileage at 39 mpg. I did
own a 2003 Prius but the overall cost is far too much for a Prius that gets 43
mpg compared to the Saturn.

Gosh Really ? I already thought of that. Not sure if I can return an open box on electrical parts... That is why I am asking the question ... Walmart has the part for $85 but ordered online. So it is not that simple and rather not go through the repackaging mess if it does not work.

So has anyone else used a new smog pump in place of the discontinued one made by ACdelco ... I have asked parts people the same question.. Their Automatic Answer is "Sorry we can not guarantee a perfect fit. " That is the answer I am getting.

Oh I also replaced that stupid shifter bushing. Found a real solid shifter bushing online. Only has 4 slices on the side and no spider net plastic mesh that you buy at the parts store. Do not buy the bushing at the parts store it's garbage. The online one is cheaper too.

"Sorry we can not guarantee a perfect fit. " That is the answer you get when you try to use the WRONG part. There are no cross reference guides for using incorrect parts. Try junk yards if you want the correct pump.

ok thanks for that. I just go buy a new one. Used ones are $50 plus shipping. I am in Seattle and the nearest pull a part closed. Probably going to replace it with another sky scraper. Building here is off the scale. I did take a photo of that yesterday. Check out the photo of Downtown Seattle instead of a car. I restored muscle cars for 12 yrs. I think I can modify the bracket and make it work. Enjoy the photo.

Just wanted to know if anyone else did the same thing of replacing with a different part and if there are any difficulties ...

I had a 1999 Saturn & the smog pump wasn't working I had a code and what I did is I went and got the upgraded version of it off a 2001 Saturn in a junkyard and it fit in there no problem and actually what happened is when you turned on the engine the smog pump was kind of noisy on a 99 but the 2001 model it was more quiet when it operated when you first start the car that's what I can remember so it fit no problem I'm pretty sure if you just get another one from your local junkyard and just return your part the new one you bought and go to a junkyard and get one off a 2001 car with low miles.

Thanks Paul, I thought about the junk yard replacement. But, I replaced all of those parts that I summarized with new parts. That was really cheap. I compared ebay, rockauto, amazon etc and all of the parts did not cost much and all are new. So, since most junk yards have no warranty I guess the best solution would be to buy new and retrofit. Actually any junkyard I've ever been too they give you like a 30 day warranty if you put it in the car and it doesn't work you just return it and get another one in this way you get to look at the different cars and different models and see the one that'll work for your vehicle but like I say a 99 Saturn and a 2001 Saturn I think it's minor fitting it together in the housing I think it's like basically an air snorkel that you have to like fit around it differently as I can remember there's not that much of a big deal that's why I was saying it'll probably work for you especially if you're just going for 2001 to 2001 there should be no retrofitting it should be a direct match and they shouldn't charge any more than $30 $40 or something but I know what you mean brand new and is nice but if you have to go through a lot of hassles to try to make it work it's just easier to go to the junkyard right?

No more junk yards here that are within 40 miles. The junk yards are selling to the developers in Seattle. So by the time I find one, pay for it, etc. Down the road the high mileage part goes out and I am stuck again searching. Thanks for the input. I thought someone out there retrofitted that Smog Pump with a new one. Might have a better clue. Guess I will just buy new and retrofit. I found one one internet used for $50 with 127,000 miles on it. But why bother with used when for $30 more dollars I will not need to open the hood for that part for a long time.

The 1999 to 2001 I think is a straight replacement part. Same one. So the lesson here is that again GM is phasing out there parts so us public folks can spend money and buy a new car. That is the game..

Yeah I know what you mean the corporate games huh buy buy buy that's all they want us to do, yeah at this point what I would do is just get a new one that's very similar to yours that you have a new part online or whatever and then maybe you can disassemble it and reassemble it with your old pump you know what I mean swap out the new parts put them in your old housing of the old part maybe that'll work for you I don't know?

I did think of swapping out the old parts but the damn thing is sealed. At least the older muscle cars were easy to work on which you could take them apart and replace what was needed.

Then I guess your only option is to buy a brand new one and try to get it as close as the original one that you have and do the mods oh well that sucks about the junkyard because I have a lot of them in my area and it wouldn't be an issue for me to find one and see if I can make it work and if it didn't work I can always have the option of going and getting another one good luck to you

In my State the Emission check can get an Exemption if you spend $150 at a shop for repairs. The shops charge $90 an hour. So you do not get much done for the exemption. Four yrs ago the Check Engine Light went off after the spark plugs and wires were replaced at a shop. Also, the starter went out. So that bill was not cheap. So since I do not want to spend an enormous amount of money for minor repair again. I decided to replace with new parts myself. Also I only have about three parts left that are not new. I value my time and prefer new parts that take less time up. That is why ....

Yeah you can't beat new parts but sometimes if you got a junkyard almost in your backyard regarding where you live it's cost-effective & a little bit more of a pain in the ass but it is the cheapest way to do it. Yeah spark plugs that kind of stuff is pretty simple to do you got to look that stuff up online you can do it yourself! With GM cars I noticed that if you pump extra gasoline just a little bit into your tank over at the pump then it triggers one of the sensors to be bad in the evaporation fuel tank system and what that is that you never should over pump at the gas station cuz it does & could damage the emissions systems but all you have to do is just reset it get a cheap code reader and delete that code Just for future adventures with cars you know what I mean!

Hey Paul thanks for that input. I started out by painting cars in my dad driveway. Actually won a large award at Earl Warren Showgrounds when Chip Foose won nothing right after graduating High School. We were in the county area so no laws. Here in Seattle the Police love to justify their jobs.... So can not do that here. I worked for Clenet Coachworks for 3 years. $70,000 cars in the early 80's. Looks like you have either a Monte Carlo or a Big Block Chevrolet from your photo. My Saturn looks like crap, but, my 2002 Jaguar is cool, comfortable and it gets 26 mpg with a 5 speed automatic.

Wow that's impressive did better than Chip Foose that's cool he must have kissed a lot of Hollywood ass to get the shows he has ofcourse he does have some talent too. No that's actually a 1969 Ford LTD and my other two vehicles are a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP supercharged Edition and just a 2002 Honda van that's only got like 45 thousand miles on it!

My brother owned a 1970 Torino GT Convertible that I restored for him after he hit black ice and wrecked both sides. It was the limited model with the hidden headlights with only 900 made. Could not fix the right front fender which was very rare due to the hidden lights, Ford had one at the factory ... $164 only and they were glad to blow off the dust to get it out of the shelf. Put it in Black 8 coats of paint. Then sanded the paint with 1800 grit wet sand paper and polished it, Looked like the Batmobile. Had to park it away from everyone.

Wow that's incredible was it a Cobra Jet engine GT and you actually contacted Ford Motor Company and they actually had the part that is amazing!

Yeah this car is not as cool this 1969 Ford LTD but it does have the sought-after hideaway headlights which I really love! vacuum controlled! Do you know where I can get aftermarket headlights for this car that is way better than the original ones cuz the headlights aren't that bright on this car.
