Why do my brakes go to the floor?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I noticed my brake light had come on and brakes began to not work so well. It
was really slow to stop. I replaced the master cylinder then noticed fluid squirting
out near the rear right side. It was a broken brake line. I replaced that. Still the
brakes do not work. They are still going to the floor.

Who replaced the master cylinder ? It has to be bled separate from the rest of the system , if one brake line rotted and broke then you can expect others to go , are you religious ?

Since my husband has gone to sleep I will respond to this. He has always taken care of our vehicles as he has been a mechanic for years, now retired for several years. He still does our own. He has inspected all the lines and found no leaks. Now why the question about me being religious? What does that have to do with anything? Also, he knew how to bleed the master cylinder.

The master cylinder must be bench bled before it's installed on the vehicle. It used to be a common practice to not bleed the rest of the system when installing a new master cylinder. But in your case the rest of the system must be bled because you have air in the brake lines from the break and leak. Antilock brakes are also different. You must get the air out of the pump and modulator assembly too. Hope that helps! Jim

Sounds like there is air still in the brake lines. Bleed starting with the farthest from the master cylinder and work you way forward i.e. RR, LR, RF, LF Hopes this helps.
