I have 2007 5.7 6cyl chrysler 300 limited with a tapping noise in the upper engine but somtimess its doesnt tap and then sometimess it does. Its sporadic in its tapping but when traveling long distances it taps very badly. Chrysler mechanic told me it was the plenum but I find that to be impossible. I am almost positive I am hearing the lifters being that I have ran into lifters noise many time times in the past. The plenum just doesn't make any sense and am dumb founded as to why it taps sometime and then other times it doesn't. I added an additive to quite it down and it does for a bit but comes right back soon after. Please help me figure this out.
Sounds like a lifter is sticking. Sometimes it sticks so you hear the tap. Other times it's unstuck and so it doesn't tap. I had a '66 Cadillac, years ago, that did the same thing. Does the car sit for long periods or do you mainly take short trips with it? If so, try driving it more frequently and for longer trips. That'll probably clear it up for you. HTH. -Jim
