How do I make sure 96 4x4 tahoe is out of 4hi

Get the wheels in something lose like sand or dirt. Then put the vehicle in drive and accelerate hard. If you are out of 4WD only your rear wheels will spin. I know it's old school but it's a quick and easy test.
