What is the s button for in the jaguar stype and what are some common problem

Tom's answer is spot on. A bit more on the 'S' button, it gives greater acceleration by holding the car in each gear longer so using the power of the higher revs in each gear, a more noisy and exciting drive but uses of course more fuel!

I am told by a local mechanic that because my 2004 S type was left in sport mode the transmission needs to be replaced.

has anyone heard this before?

I have a 2000 s type I just got I love the S mode I haven't had any problems with the trans yet but as far as the transmission wearing out because of it is possible it changes the shift point so it shifts faster and harder therefore putting more wear on the trans

I have a check engine light for a p1385 Google is not much help does anyone know what this is and where it's at and if it makes the car loose power?

On the maplight console there is a button with an "R" on it has a red light won't shut of what is this for?

The button marked "R" and the red light attached when on. It switches on the sensor beepers they will start beeping when you go into reverse. It's just to keep you up to date on everything that might be a hazard in your way while you back up. Test it out switch it on then engage reverse.

@pgflorida i know this is an older post but this would totally make sense! As i just had to replace my transmission on my 04 xj8 with 40k original miles! And i had left it in sport mode roughly for the past 6 months not thinking it would really hurt it in anyway, i wasnt out racing around, i just liked the little extra get up and go once in a while when passing other cars
