Does my transmission need service

I noticed my transmission is slipping and when I shift from park to reverse the car jerks,
never changed the fluid myself, but would like to save a couple of bucks by doing it myself. Or should I just have it serviced.

When hot, the transmission does not shift from first to second - and you cannot check the fluid level what needs to be done?
