1996 roadmaster hot light is on

Drove the car about a mile and HOT light came on and stayed on.  Weather here is 30 degrees. What could the problem be?

You be low on coolant, caused by a sticking thermostat, or a coolant leak from water pump, hoses, radiator, head gasket. Best have it looked at.
