Backfired and won't run

Asked by Jan 30, 2017 at 02:53 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe 4 Dr LT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My boyfriend was driving home last night when out of nowhere his Tahoe backfired and then died.  We had to have it towed home and when he tried to start it again it backfired again and still wont start.  Any ideas as to what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Sounds like the timing chain has jumped. Run a compression test. If all cylinders test very low or zero, it's jumped timing. HTH. -Jim
