1997 Tahoe 1st, 2nd reverse gear only
Took in shop to check a front end leak. Turned out to be radiator & water pump. Picked
up after replacement, got 2 miles from shop going up hill and no 3rd gear although it
was OK up to that point. Got home on 1st & 2nd. Mechanic came out, checked
transmission fluid put in 3 quarts. Road tested, no change. Took back to shop & left.
Mechanic said it would go into overdrive if really pushed at 2nd. Said fluid was burned,
trans will have to be pulled & repaired/rebuilt. Would lack of fluid have caused this to
happened? Vehicle has 170,000 miles.Thanks.
170000 miles is pushing it for a 4L60e. I would say it was worn out but the low fluid most likely finished it off. If you loose or start loosing tranny fluid line pressure it will reduce the pressure on the clutch packs causing wear when they slip. Does your '97 have the tranny cooler in the rad or is it external (tow package). If hey did the rad they would have disconnected those lines, if you have them.
My thoughts exactly, yet. The shop didn't bother to check the transmission fluid level after they did the radiator replacement. HTH. -Jim
I've seen worse. A shop forgot to pull the shipping plugs from the tranny cooler ports and connected the lines anyway. That plastic is pretty tough. I can't remember what happened, or if it damaged the tranny but wow.
