What is cost if fuse box needs to be replaced and does that sound like problem?

Asked by Feb 08, 2014 at 01:12 PM about the 2006 MINI Cooper S Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car sometimes won't start. 5 days now in shop. Thinking replace fuse box. All else
seems fine. They can't seem to figure out. Looking for something that is draining new
battery. Starts right up when charged. Any ideas. Just bought 2 months ago.

Most likely the fuse box is part of the wiring harness. Not a good idea to start hacking into the harness to replace it. What they need to do is get a 12 volt dc test light and disconnect the positive (+) battery cable. Connect the test light in series between the positive battery post and the disconnected positive battery cable. The test light will glow dimly because of the computers and radio. They always draw a small amount of power. If the test light glows brightly there's a problem. Start by removing and installing each fuse, one by one, until the test light goes dim or goes out. If you must have the door open remove the fuse for the interior lights and leave it out while testing. When the test light goes dim or goes out that's the problem circuit. Once you've isolated the problem circuit you'll have to check the wiring and the components on that circuit to find the short. HTH. -Jim
