Issues with engine power and possible overheating

Asked by Aug 29, 2016 at 12:39 PM about the 1993 Mazda MX-6 2 Dr LS Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I first got the car I had issues where my car
would suddenly lose power in the engine and try to
shut itself off especially if I am taking off from 1st
gear. The problem went away when I changed my
distributor but then it resurfaced only to be solved
by changing a bad ignition cable. Just the other
day it has started having these idle and take off
issues again, it seems to happen on hot days or
when I am making back-to-back stops or idling for
too long. Just to get from 40 mph to 50 mph I have
to down shift and force the car to push out more
power. I have almost no car knowledge so I
apologize for my poor explanation. My brother who
previously owned the car could not find what was
causing the car to have these issues. My best
guess is that the thermostat is tricking the car into
thinking it is overheating and trying to turn itself off
but my temperature gauge does not correlate with
my theory. What is the most possible cause of this
