Could be a issue with the fuel pressure regulator or maybe even a fouled up fuel filter. I'd take her to a mechanic and have the diagnostic codes read to determine the source of the problem.

It could have a gunked up throttle body or even a bad Idle control valve. It would be a good idea to get a cheap code reader if your planning on fixing it yourself. This link @ miata.net might be of some help: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=175288

Same thing happened to me, it would run fine then loose power running rough for a short while then return back to normal, it turned out to be a failing coil pack which is well known on the MX5 a diagnostic should confirm if this is the case, replaced the coil pack with a new one - problem solved!

I took your advice and planned to change the coil pack. I purchased a manual and did some initial exploration. When I removed the coil pack leads, I found one was badly corroded. After cleaning and refitting the lead, the car ran perfectly. Thanks for your excellent advice
