I have 95 Miata and it seems to slip in gear until it's warmed up, rpms will go up and then it reengages. It's worse in cold weather, also going dead at stop lights, etc.

Is it an automatic or manual transmission? If its a stickshift the clutch and flywheel could be worn out, if its an auto it could need a service or a complete rebuild on the trans. The going dead at a complete stop could be transmission related or maybe a air idle control going bad. How many miles are or the car?

Thats low mileage for the year and my interest and knowledge is primarely with stick shift miatas. So here is a link to Miata.net and there auto trans section, maybe they can provide more info. Your car is a 1st generation or NA miata which was produced from 1990 to 1997. I would still check the fluid level once its been warmed up. Make sure the fluid is red in color and doesnt smell burnt, also it wouldnt hurt to get it serviced to see if your issues clear up since that is way cheaper than a rebuild or replacement. Good luck http://forum.miata.net/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=62
