Pennzoil 5w-30, every 3000 miles. Always end up having to put in extra oil. What can I do to fix this? Do I need to ask for an extra quart every oil change?

No do not put extra oil at the time of your oil change. Sounds like you may be burning oil. You can use a heavier weight oil at your next change or try some Lucas oil, it may help...

Evidently your car is using some oil. I would carry an extra quart with me and add as necessary. Also perhaps try a different brand of oil, this may or may not help with the oil consumption issue. Just out of curiosity, how many miles on your VW?

Almost 160,000 miles. Is there anything I can do to keep from putting extra oil in it? Could I ask for an extra quart when they do my oil change? Any suggestions on a different oil?

One quart every 3,000 miles is not bad at all. If it were me I would change the oil every 3,000 miles anyway. When the oil is clean you will use less oil. You could go to 10w-40 oil which might reduce oil consumption a little.

The guys above are right - don't add extra oil until it is low. Over filling the engine can cause engine damage.

As the others have said, don't overfill the oil. 1 extra quart probably won't hurt, but the extra quart might make it use more oil than it does now.

Running a extra quart high is pretty much a guarantee that there will be oil leaks!
