Can I drive my Volkswagen passat without further damage? The alternator workshop light came on and then the battery light and power steering went out. Looks like it is probably the tensioner belt.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

From research it looks like it is the tensioner belt but it's Sunday and I have to work
tonight and can't find a rental car close to me everything is closed. My job is about 14
miles one way, mostly freeway. I drove the car home last night no problems just no power
steering. I can get the car fixed on Monday but really need to drive it today. Would that be
a problem?

So your water pump must be timing belt driven as you didn't overheat, the next question is how big of a battery do you have, how many reserve minutes will it last? You are only running on the battery so you won't get too far before it quits running, especially driving at night with all of the lights on. You might make it there if your battery is 100% charged, but you won't make it back home. All though you could buy another battery, make sure it is fully charged and take it with you, then install it before you head back home. But to be sure you make it to work get a taxi it might be cheaper in the long run, unless you can get someone to give you a ride there and back.
