I have a 99 tracker with an issue a mechanic can not seem to find.
The car when the wheel is turned all the
way either direction has a popping noise an
sensation. Like something is stuck but
then comes unlodged. Please help the
mechanic is not having luck figuring it out.
sounds like a bad wheel bearing.
Wheel bearing was replaced twice. Still doing it.
You are describing a CV joint that is worn out. Has he put it on a rack and had someone hold the steering wheel all the way in one direction and tried to manually turn both tires then turn the wheel the other way and do the same thing?
He has also replaced both cv joints twice, just encase the first set was faulty.
Still have him try the lock to on the steering, ther could be something running in a bind when in that position, could even be a spider gear.
That is what the axle shaft shoves into inside the differential housing, if it is worn enough it can (walk) up,the shoulder of the ring gear then slap back down.
Wouldn't the sound an sensation stop then if the differential was removed?
Yes But I believe your rig is a front wheel drive normally so that won't work.

I did a little research on your problem, didn't find much listing your problem, so I am wondering if the steering stop has been moved or damaged causing it to over steer one direction or other that would put a bind on pivot of the C/V joint even though they are new. Might be worth a look.

rack & pinion is bad I have replace on 2 different tracker in the last 2 years 1 of them was my own
