I bought vw beetle in 2005, the auto transmission
when shifted to D will not work as normal such as
engine rpm stays at high rev.

Can you drive off or are you just stuck in neutral?? And, if you can drive off, does the engine rev in neutral when the shift from 1st to 2nd occurs?

If your transmission revs up in neutral from 1st to 2nd, that's definitely NOT good. The only other thing is that you check out the speed sensor on the car or the computer. If those items are fine, it's probably a transmission problem and it will cost a fortune. I'm sorry, but I lost confidence in VW after owning two of them.
