Deep Engine Sound

Asked by Sep 20, 2008 at 10:09 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Beetle GLS 2.0

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently removed the flat air filter from my airbox in my GLS 2.0, after 2 hours of trying to get it out, i cleaned it and it only took 10 minutes to put it back in, now when it runs, around 3200 rpms, it has a deep engine sound, it has increased performance, but what is going on. I don't really mind, but if something is wrong, can someone please tell me

2 hours? on my Honda Civic is takes 2 seconds lol. And the deep sound is usually when the air filter is not in properly or damaged. Go buy a new one instead of using the one u washed. They need to be replaced unless its a K&N washable filter.

The VW beetle has no room underneath the hood so that is why you cannot easily remove the airbox, it is contained where you cannot remove it, by the way, i am purchasing a new K&N washable lay flat filter, actually i already did, and im getting a cold air intake to replace it, thanks

Dude the original filter was fine, you get the increased performance and noise, because the engine is breathing better, your car is fine.

If you installed the OEM filter the car should be quieter and smoother NOT louder. If its the K&N its possible that it makes a deeper sound without malfunction. If something is screwed good luck passing a smog test.
