i just bought a 2001 GLS about 2 days ago, and i dont know much about jettas, but yesterday i noticed that the rpms were reving too high when changing gears (its an automatic), and i was wondering if it could be the transmission fluid, and if so, how can i check it? and change it? thanks so much!! -Caitlyn
Check the dipstick with the engine warmed up and idling in park. Wipe it off and reinsert it and pull it out again and read the end for the correct level. If the fluid smells burnt, have it towed ASAP to your favorite shop and have the fluid completely flushed, not just the pan dropped.
How high is too high? Above the red line or just upwards? Granted it shouldn't be doing this at all. I too would suspect that it needs a system flush. How many miles are on the car? You might have a shop just inspect it for you if you don't exactly know what you are looking for. If the fluid is bad, you need to have a reputable shop with the proper fluid exchange equipment perform the repairs.
