I have a 99 chevy suburban 4wheel drive when I begin to drive it goes for maybe 5 feet then the gears won't catch....
Check the fluid, refill if needed, if full make sure the color is a bright red, if it isn't and looks and smells burnt then the trans is cooked, if it is then you either have a TCM that is messing up or the solenoids are going bad. Get the codes checked, see if there are any transmission codes listed, that would give you a place to start, 6 out of 10 times it is the solenoids. HTH
when was it last serviced, low fluid flow can also cause this condition due to plugged filters.
