Catalytic converter replacement '96 Jetta

Asked by Jan 12, 2014 at 10:39 AM about the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta 4 Dr City Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a '96 Jetta that failed the emissions test because of a bad Catalytic converter. I
am a poor highschool student and I would like to do the work myself to replace it if I can.
Can I clamp it in with exhaust clamps, pass the test and have it work?  Or do I have to
get it welded in by a pro?

The easiest way is to cut the old one off with a sawsall and put it back with clamps. But make sure you get a couple of adapters so it will slide on your exhaust to be able to clamp it.
