VW determined that the dipstick and fill might invite owners to introduce wrong or inferior fluid. It does not have provision for a dipstick. What is it doing that you think more fluid will help?

Is it the automatic transmission? The auto tranny has two separate fluid systems. One for the shifting and one for the gears. Either automatic or manual, you probably should take it to a shop for a fluid change unless you can do it yourself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_01M_transmission

How to add/replace manual tranny fluid -> http://www.ehow.com/how_7444087_add- fluid-1997-volkswagen-jetta.html --- You might want to check out some VW forums. The GTI owners might be able to tell you probable causes of the noises. http://www.vwforum.com/forums/ --- http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisplay.php? 5001-Volkswagen
