Might want to check and see if it will fit, '85 to '90 was a major body style change.

All VW Rabbit Convertables (1979 to 1983) and Cabriolet (1984 to 1993) have the same Mk I body. The top did change between 1979 and 1980. You can port the whole top assembly from one car to another. However the rear cable will need to be replaced. There are several very good explanations at www.cabby-info.com. The only major change to the body was the addition of the "clipper kit" in 1988 where side skirts and new bumpers were added.
