agreed, but you might want to check that it is engaged, I just replaced on on a 2000 and all it was, was the drive gear didn't engage. Have to tried to manually open and close the roof? If it is not engaging, this might "reset" it (that is what VW told me). Hope for the best expect the worst...... best of luck.

Check your fluid level in the top hydraulic cylinders, if so equipped. Again, not sure whether your convertible uses a hydraulic top or a gear-driven top. I believe hydraulic but I'm not sure.
