Belts on a 1999 chevy cavalier

My '99 cavalier was making noise thought it was a
lifter but turns out it was the water pump pulley
lose or ? Anyway I figured it pinched the belts and
broke the serpintine belt lost it on hwy and the
single belt was wrapped up in the pulleys , I need to
know what the single belt is for so I can replace it

The single belt is the serpentine belt and drives all your pulleys/accessories. Sometimes the belts wear and snap, other times, the pulleys loosen or freeze, or you can have a faulty belt tensioner that can throw the belt off or wrap around the pulleys in your case. I don't think you lost your belt on the highway, maybe a part of it, the other part is wrapped around the pulleys.
