yeah BMW are made to last and perform im was just saying generally b/c not everyone takes care of their cars before they sell them so basically if its got a BMW logo on the hood and trunk, its a good realiable to car to get 'nuff said

For the most part, yes. If you do have to replace items it is going to get very expensive. Keep that in mind.
i have had several and i think they are great cars and if somehtign does end up going wrong the reapir cost is not near as much higher than most people think or will tell you
BMW is generally a reliable car BUT all of them tend to have weak spots which I am sure the company is aware of and for some reason they dont change or improve them, I am assuming to sell more spare parts. But as a former BMW owner inclusive of a E30, E36 and E39 my review is as follows: 1) Steering components weak; even though those components make you feel very safe while driving your BMW cause they even let you feel the slightest gravel piece on the road they fail too soon, especially the sterring box. 2) Electronic gadgets so and so; the company may be using high tech gadets and tools but is that what you need as a driver, I mean there are hundreds of sensors and cables all over the place and they fail all the time, even the pixels on the instrument cluster fall off, is this what you expect from a luxery car? 3) Labor and Detail Quality; exceptional, even most rival companies agree on that. 4) Engine; in your case a 2001 BMW Convertible probably has a 6 cyl engine and thats a M54, pretty reliable in most cases, compared to the M52 Nikasil issue they had between 1996-1999 its solid rock but camshaft and crank sensors due fail from time to time. 5) Ride Quality; smooth and aggresive all together, it depends on how you drive the car, it reacts very well to commands and even the transmission has an adaptive system. OVERALL on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 7.

No car gets a 10, every car manufacturer has a glitch or a problem with their production line, sometimes they become aware of these glitches and problems and even though corrections are sometimes too expensive they recall to correct them, sometimes if they consider it to be minor problem they dont solve the problem to sell spare parts for the specific make or model. The default value can be from any perspective, ride quality, reliability, leg room, engine characteristics you name it but there is no manufacturer whom I consider gets a 10 out of 10. Regards.
The man looks like he's from the USA. The Nakasil issue never made it to american shores. Steel sleeves were used there. The M52 was voted as one of the top 10 best motors in the world for 6 years running. They are absolutely brilliant and one of the choices for high horse power applications. The only issue you have wit ha BMW is that its a little more expensive to mainain but once you get a good one you'll drive it for ever. The AUTO boxes suffer from slippage at about 100,000 miles common problem. Steering boxes etc only on the older models. E36 and post models were ok. Buy it/
I owned an E46 M3 with SMG II. Mechanical-wise, the car is awesome. Handle well, go fast, etc, etc. Unfortunately I am not happy with the craftsmanship of the “little” thing in my M3. Almost every 2 months I had to bring it for small service (none mechanical related), (there is 1 service recall on the SMG) such as: central lock does not work, windows does not go up/down, sunroof does not close, etc. Even the service advisor told me that I am not the first one complains on them. If I am spending $60k on a bimmer – it should be good, right? Other things to watch out for - after the warranty period is over, bringing my M3 to service/labor at the Bimmer shop is not cheap at all. Therefore from now on – I just lease my bimmer… after 3 years, I just return it and get a new one.
Sure! Every car manufacturer has issues. I work for a supplier. we got issues. so they have issues. There is no perfect car. But if you want something close to it. then go with an BMW or Mercedes. BMW is the only car manufactures who got a Test center at the Nuerburgring the toughtest race track on earth! (I love the Ring) someone has to get a 10 out of 10. I got me a BMW E46 M3. I had to go the the shop a few times. But if you got a 3.2 liter engine with 333/343HP w/o any charger you better take care of it. A german car is the way to go! Look up the 10 forst cars there are only car from the US or Japan on there. You pay more for a german car b/c they engineer all the goodies. and all other just copie it! Did you know that they make no money with the s-class or the 7 series b/c of all the engineering?
The M52 was or is the best ingine between 3.0 and 4.0 liter and that for six years!
Yep! If you want an M than you need to pay for it. service and all the other stuff. It looks like you you got a monday or Friday car. Anyway you are one out of 1000 who had all the issues.
There are too many variables from manufacturing to the quality of care and maintenance it has received. Some models on some years are excellent. Others are not. Then there is the issue on how you are going to drive and treat the card. Best of luck.
Iv owned a BMW for the last 7 years and all I have done is service it apart from a window wiper motor and a water pump and I myself have covered 80,000 miles in it so yes I would say that it is reliable.
