The sensor is in the expansion tank, so if the level is low, the light should come on. If it isn't, the sensor or the tank is faulty. If your losing coolant, fix it ASAP, you don't want to overheat and warp the engine heads.

Yellow, should be a symbol, look at your owners manual to what the light should look like.
