i was driving on the highway and fuel light came on I was exiting the highway to get gas and car just stalled out and I got a gas can put gas in it but would not crank over, my friend suggested fuel pump, but another friend told me that a fuel pump wouldn't go while driving, both are mechanics what do u think?

Sounds like you ran out of fuel and either burned out the pump or you got some dirt in the fuel lines. How is the fuel pressure? When you trying to initially start the car, did you prime the fuel system to get the pressure up high enough? ( Turn the key on and off a few times) Either way the fuel lines and pump need t o be inspected.
