was my starter really going out?

ok, i have been having trouble for a while now to start it broke down completely
at rite aid one night and i was stranded until someone helped me by tapping on
the starter while i turned the ignition, and it turned over thank God. i got home
and i banged on it a few times after that to start it but i went to go start it and it
wouldnt after i banged on it and tried a few different times since... and then
boom the air filter under the hood built up so much pressure that it blew the lid
off and a hole through the filter. what could it be that is wrong?

Tapping on a starter and getting the car to start is an emergency procedure. Since it worked, it meant the starter was on it's way to failure. Sounds like it gave up the ghost. Never heard of an air box lid blowing off. I would suspect too much crankcase pressure, so check the PCV and related hoses.
