ABS Trouble

Asked by Jun 22, 2015 at 02:05 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Cavalier and the ABS light is on. The code says that the driver's side
wheel speed sensor has no signal. I replaced the sensor and checked the wiring. No
breaks in the wires. Then I started to bleed the brakes but only got the rear brakes bled
due to rain. Now when you first start the vehicle the ABS is functioning and the light is
off but when you put it in gear and start moving the light comes back on. What do I
need to look at to try to fix the problem?

If you replaced the sensor, and reset the ECM,check the wiring harness for breaks or damage.

also look to see if the sensor is aligned correctly. Bad wheel bearing will cause the sensor to work correctly...

It's the pump and modulator assembly. The ABS system checks the sensors at start up. Then when you start moving the computer cycles the modulator pump. If the pump doesn't run like it should during this test the ABS light comes on and the system is disabled until the next time you start the engine. Then the self diagnosis repeats. BTW the ABS computer does not store trouble codes or need to be reset after a repair. It clears itself when you turn off the engine. HTH. - Jim
