first you need to see what code you getting thats setting check engine light on. iv seen some vehicle with a 14.+ volts reading which is normal and a good indication that altenator is working accordingly. with vehicle not running battery voltage should be around 12-13v. found a forum online showing it as normal however a bad voltage regulator inside altenator can cause such issues, also make sure battery post are clean and have good contact and no corrosion. did this issue just recently start?

Measure the voltage at the battery engine running. It should be between 13.2 to 14.6 volts. If the voltage is over 15 volts the alternator is overcharging and that can ruin the battery by boiling the electrolyte out of it. If you indeed have an over voltage issue have the alternator tested. It may be bad even if it was new. If everything checks out and the voltage is still high I would recommend taking it to a reputable mechanic for further diagnosis.
