Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 2005 dodge ram that started to make a clanking noise when i put it in or out of gear.As far as the transmission goes it is not slipping at all.Took it to the shop and they stated they wouldnt even do anything if they were for sure that it wasnt doing damage to anything, stated theyve done research over the net and have never experienced this problem that it was weird. Want 300.00 to pull apart just to look at it for starters. can anyone please help, i need this truck for work, im a contractor by trade and use it everyday to haul my tools. Really getting scared to drive it but it shifts fine.

this truck is a 2005 dodge ram slt model with a hemi 5.7. are they good trucks? just bought it.

Chuck, from the way you make it sound, it sounds like theirs too much pinion backlash in the rear end. crawl under the truck and look at the rear end, right where the ujoint at the pinion flange is, if you can see gear fluid leaking from that area you have a bad pinion bearing, which can cause your clunking in and out of gear. No matter what id say the problem is more than likely with the rearend of the truck.

ok buddy thank you for your quick response and ill let you know what i find out. do you think it will get worse if i just drive back and fourth to work for a few days or do anymore damage? thanks again!! ill look at it tomorrow.

While you're down there check the universal joints too. Loose U-Joints can cause the same sound and will also cause vibrations when driving at highway speeds. Look for play in the joints or obvious signs of rusty coloration around the rubber seals.

hey mike yea that was one of the first things that we looked at and they seem to be ok. didnt have a chance to look at the rear because its to dark right now and pouring down raining. thanks bud!!

well dan bad news, after investigating further the noise is coming from the parking paw on the side of the transmission. do you know if this can be fixed without tearing out the tranny? the parking paw is on the side so you may be able to get to it from dropping the pan, not sure. helpppp?? lol

i just had my rear end replaced i was driven down the road at abt 45 mph and it just locked up that fast so thank god for warrenty it cost dodge 4,500 to put a new rearend in it sounds like thats ur problem but u do want to check ur u joint to i know when u put it in gear it can make a clunken sound the only thing is when u put it in park a u joint really dont make the same sound and u said it makes the same sound when u do both i think it is ur rear end it will lock up on u if u keep driven it rite before mine locked up it felt like a helocopter was fling over my truck and it just stopped i had to put it in 4 wheel drive to drag it off the road

I have the same problem with my 2005 dodge it makes a clanking noise when put into park or off. I did replace all the u joints and had to replace the front drive shaft. Do not know what else to do. Anyone have an answer?
