I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 4.7 And it cuts off
while I'm driving as well as jumps skips and sputters.
It'll start right back up but it dies regularly while im
driving. Recently it started making a little knocking
noise. Any ideas or suggestions what it might be?
Sounds like your engine is in a death spiral. I had a 4.7 Magnum and it went through all that with a bad timing chain - the timing chain that Dodge insists is not a serviceable part that should last the life of the car, only it doesn't. First thing you need to do is get any trouble codes read. You may be setting multiple misfires. Cutting off, jumping sputtering - the could be bad fuel delivery/pressure or it could be bad timing (actually it could be a lot of things but let's stick with relevant ones for now). The knock sensor will shut an engine down cold when it senses an engine knocking. The fact it starts right back up leads me to think your fuel pump and fuel pressure are working fine, so chances are the rough running is not from lack of fuel pressure. You also have knocking/tapping coming from engine - try and determine is it's one-half engine RPM or equal to engine RPM. one-half indicates cam or valve train problems, equal to indicates bottom end (rods, crank, pistons) if knocking is indeterminate, and random, it could be timing chain slap, from stretching due to bad tensioners. That was my problem, bad tensioners letting too much slack into timing chain - the 4.7 is NOTORIOUS for that. Changing those out is a major pain, being dual overhead cam. I suggest you get codes read and diagnose knock.
Thank you i appreciate it. I'm gonna get it checked this morning actually.
