Please tell me how i can find outer tie rod ends for my 2003 dodge 1500 when the dealership says that style is discontinued and parts store gives my tie rod ends that are 2" too long?

Asked by Trklover Apr 11, 2010 at 02:24 AM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

At my wits end.  Dealership says part is discontinued and would have to buy whole rack n pinion Went to salvage yard bought R&P assembly installed,  All fit well until i went to put tie rod end bolt into tire side/bracket, tie rod end bolt is WAY to small around so fits very loose in tire side/bracket The assembly from salvage yard has exact same tie rod ends every parts store in the county has tried to sell me. Can anyone please explain to me what the heck is going on? I expected to simply change the tie rod ends out this is insane and money is tight these days. Please help

generally when some thing like this happens, you have to buy after market style tie rod ends, check out summitracing.com or jegs.com theyd prolly have it.

Has everyone else been showing you a Moog ES3538? I looked this up for you on the Advance Auto Parts website and am wondering if our listings are incorrect as well. I checked the Summit site with same results. Check out your local Advance Store if there is one in you area, otherwise you can order throught the website as well. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&searchTerm=tie+rod+ends

each auto parts store will have a different part # for the tie rods.

Im guessing you mistyped, yes everyone has been trying to sell me Moog MOES3538 or auto zone etc. brand is just ES3538. Called mopar today and a differnt dodge dealer had them research with my VIN number they pull up the part # for the rack n pinion i bought at salvage yard and told me that is the rack n pinion it was manufactured with. the rack n pinion on my trk & the one from salvage yard r only differnt part #'s by the last 2 digits. no one i call can figure out which tie rod belongs to the rack n pinion on my truck. The picture on summit website for the Rancho brand is exactly what mine look like Rancho #RAN-RS602614 but summit says pics are generic & not always what the part looks like. The problem with MOES3538 is the female threads are 11/2" too long and would toe tires out 11/2" & male threads that go into the knuckle are at least 1/4" too small in diameter so cannot possibly seat. to make the rack n pinion from salvage yard work and MOES3538 i would have to change out the tire bracket/knuckle which is $350 for each side. Summit or Rancho neither one can give me any kind of measurements on the ran-rs602614
